Overview

The human rabies vaccine (MRC-5 cells) is an **inactivated viral vaccine** prepared from the Pitman-Moore strain of rabies virus grown in human diploid MRC-5 fibroblast cells. The Pitman-Moore strain is propagated in these cells, inactivated, and then formulated as a sterile, stable, freeze-dried suspension for intramuscular injection to immunize against rabies. The primary mechanism is induction of a strong, long-lasting humoral immune response by presenting non-replicating rabies virus particles to the immune system, thereby producing protective neutralizing antibodies. The original human diploid cell-based rabies vaccine was developed as a safer alternative to nerve tissue or egg-based vaccines, offering an improved safety and immunogenicity profile. The vaccine is recommended both for **post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)** and **pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP)** against rabies[7][9].
