Overview

The **human rotavirus RIX4414 strain vaccine** is a live, attenuated, oral vaccine used for the prevention of rotavirus gastroenteritis in infants. It is a monovalent vaccine derived from the human G1P[8] rotavirus strain, specifically the 89-12 strain (cloned as RIX4414), attenuated by serial passage in African Green Monkey kidney cells. The vaccine induces immunity by stimulating the production of anti-rotavirus IgA antibodies following oral administration. Efficacy trials demonstrated high effectiveness against both severe and any-grade rotavirus gastroenteritis caused by G1 and select non-G1 (G3, G4, G9) types. The vaccine is administered as an oral, two-dose series to infants between 6 and 24 weeks of age. Developed initially by Avant Immunotherapeutics and sub-licensed and manufactured by GSK, this strain forms the basis of the product marketed globally as Rotarix[2][3][4].
