This is a combination drug consisting of human serum albumin (HSA) and a platinum-based anticancer agent. The formulation leverages the natural abundance and biocompatibility of HSA to deliver platinum compounds—such as Pt(II) or Pt(IV) agents—more effectively to tumor sites. Platinum drugs are well-known for their DNA-damaging cytotoxic effects in cancer therapy, but their clinical use is limited by toxicity and poor selectivity. By binding or conjugating these agents to HSA (either non-covalently or via coordination bonds), the resulting nanoparticles or complexes can improve pharmacokinetics, enhance tumor targeting through the enhanced permeability and retention effect, reduce systemic toxicity, and provide multimodal antitumor action including induction of apoptosis, autophagy, inhibition of angiogenesis, and modulation of the tumor microenvironment[1][2]. Specific examples include non-covalent complexes with Pt(IV) prodrugs designed for stability in blood[1], as well as covalent/coordination complexes such as HSA–Pt(Dp44mT), which binds at His-242 on albumin[2].
