Overview

Human umbilical cord blood cells are the cellular components isolated from the blood remaining in the placenta and attached umbilical cord after childbirth. This cell population is rich in various types of stem and progenitor cells—primarily hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), but also mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), and very small embryonic-like stem cells (VSELs)[3][7][8]. These multipotent or pluripotent-like populations can differentiate into a range of cell types including all major lineages of the hematopoietic system as well as some non-hematopoietic tissues[1][7]. The primary mechanism of action is through engraftment following transplantation to reconstitute or repair damaged or deficient hematopoietic systems. Cord blood transplants are used clinically for treatment of cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, immune deficiencies, bone marrow failure syndromes, hemoglobinopathies like sickle cell disease and thalassemia, certain metabolic disorders, and are being investigated for regenerative medicine applications[1][2][3][5][6]. Cord blood units are collected at birth using sterile techniques with no risk to mother or infant donor; they can be cryopreserved for long-term storage in public or private banks[6].
