PNEUMOSTEM (human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells) is an allogeneic, off-the-shelf cell therapy developed by Medipost for the prevention and treatment of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in premature infants. The product consists of ex vivo cultured mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) derived from unrelated human umbilical cord blood. These cells are administered via a single intratracheal dose and exert their therapeutic effects through paracrine mechanisms that reduce lung inflammation, fibrosis, and apoptosis. Additionally, hUCB-MSCs have the potential to differentiate into pulmonary epithelial and endothelial cells, thereby supporting the regeneration of damaged lung tissue. The therapy has received Orphan Drug and Fast Track designations from the US FDA and Orphan Drug designation from the EMA.
