Overview

Human umbilical cord blood mononuclear cells (hUCB-MNCs) are a heterogeneous population of neonatal cells derived from umbilical cord blood, comprising hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, endothelial progenitor cells, and various immune cells such as lymphocytes and monocytes. These cells are being investigated as a regenerative and immunomodulatory cell therapy for a wide range of conditions, particularly neurological and inflammatory disorders. The therapeutic mechanism is primarily attributed to paracrine effects, where the cells secrete a diverse array of cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors (such as BDNF, VEGF, and IGF-1). These secreted factors promote neuroprotection, stimulate angiogenesis, reduce apoptosis, and modulate the local immune environment to facilitate tissue repair. Development is being led by various academic institutions and biotechnology companies, including Duke University and StemCyte, with administration typically occurring via intravenous infusion or local intra-articular injection.
