Overview

Human umbilical cord blood serum is a biologic product derived from the plasma fraction of human umbilical cord blood collected after delivery. It contains high concentrations of growth factors (such as VEGF, EGF, PDGF, FGF, TGF, HGF, IGF), neurotrophic factors (including NGF), cytokines/chemokines, and other biologically active substances. These components contribute to its regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties. Human umbilical cord blood serum has been used primarily in regenerative medicine and ophthalmology—most notably as topical eye drops for severe dry eye syndrome, persistent epithelial defects of the cornea or conjunctiva, neurotrophic keratitis, ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), recurrent corneal erosions, chemical burns to the eye surface and post-corneal transplant care. Its mechanism involves stimulating proliferation and differentiation of epithelial cells on the ocular surface while providing anti-inflammatory and bacteriostatic effects due to immunoglobulins and complement proteins[2][3]. The product is prepared from donated umbilical cord blood screened for transmissible diseases[3].
