Overview

Human umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are multipotent stromal/stem cells isolated from the tissue of the human umbilical cord. They possess self-renewal capacity and can differentiate into multiple cell lineages including adipocytes, osteocytes, chondrocytes, neurons, and hepatocytes. UC-MSCs are notable for their immunomodulatory properties—they can modulate immune responses and promote tissue repair by homing to sites of injury or inflammation. Compared to bone marrow-derived MSCs (BM-MSCs), UC-MSCs have higher proliferative capacity and lower expression of HLA-ABC and HLA-DR antigens. The collection process is noninvasive as the umbilical cord is considered medical waste post-birth; thus there are minimal ethical concerns with their use. Clinically, they are being investigated for regenerative medicine applications—including treatment of decompensated liver cirrhosis[6][8], multiple sclerosis[7], pulmonary diseases[9], graft versus host disease[2], and other conditions—due to their ability to support hematopoiesis, modulate immune responses, reduce inflammation, promote engraftment/expansion of hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), and potentially deliver anti-cancer molecules locally in tumors.
