Overview

Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) are a multipotent cell therapy candidate being investigated by Shandong University for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These cells, typically isolated from the Wharton's jelly of the umbilical cord, possess significant immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and pro-regenerative properties. In the context of T2DM, hUC-MSCs are intended to improve glycemic control by reducing systemic inflammation and alleviating insulin resistance in peripheral tissues. They may also exert protective effects on pancreatic beta cells through the secretion of various paracrine factors, potentially preserving endogenous insulin production and slowing disease progression. Shandong University has advanced this therapy into Phase 1/2 clinical testing to evaluate its safety profile and impact on clinical markers such as HbA1c and C-peptide levels.
