Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This investigational cell therapy, developed by Shandong University, utilizes human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. UC-MSCs are adult stem cells characterized by their potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties. The therapy is administered via intravenous infusion and is designed to improve islet β-cell function and decrease systemic insulin resistance. Clinical evaluation in a Phase 2 trial (NCT02302599) demonstrated that a significant proportion of patients achieved improved glycemic control (HbA1c < 7.0%) and a reduction in daily insulin requirements following treatment.
