Overview

Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are an investigational allogeneic cell therapy being evaluated for the prevention and treatment of delayed graft function (DGF) and acute rejection in renal transplant recipients. This specific clinical program is led by Dr. Qipeng Sun at The Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. The therapy utilizes the immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties of stem cells harvested from the Wharton's jelly of the umbilical cord. The biological mechanism involves the secretion of paracrine factors and direct cell-to-cell interactions that suppress the host's immune response and facilitate the repair of ischemia-reperfusion injury in the transplanted organ. In clinical trials, the cells are administered via a dual-route induction regimen consisting of an intravenous infusion prior to transplantation and a direct injection into the renal artery following the procedure.
