Overview

Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from umbilical cord tissue, typically Wharton's jelly. These cells are characterized by their low immunogenicity and potent immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and tissue-repair capabilities. In clinical development, particularly at the Beijing 302 Hospital (now the Fifth Medical Center of the PLA General Hospital), hUC-MSCs are being evaluated as a cell therapy for liver failure, including acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). The therapeutic mechanism involves the migration of MSCs to the injured liver, where they secrete paracrine factors (such as cytokines and growth factors) that suppress hepatic inflammation, reduce hepatocyte apoptosis, and stimulate the regeneration of liver tissue. They have also shown potential in treating other immune-mediated and inflammatory conditions such as Crohn's disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, and psoriasis.
