Overview

Human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (hUC-MSCs) are a type of multipotent stem cell being investigated by Soochow University for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. These cells are characterized by their ability to differentiate into various cell types, including chondrocytes, and their potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. In this specific clinical application, the hUC-MSCs are labeled with ferumoxytol, a superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) nanoparticle, which serves as a tracer for Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI). This theragnostic approach allows for real-time, non-invasive monitoring of cell distribution, retention, and viability within the joint space following intra-articular injection, aiming to correlate cell behavior with clinical outcomes such as pain reduction and functional improvement in patients with mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis.
