Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cell extracellular vesicle-enriched secretome fraction is an investigational cell-free biologic developed by Medizinische Hochschule Hannover (MHH) for the treatment of sensorineural hearing loss, particularly in patients receiving cochlear implants. This therapeutic fraction is derived from the conditioned medium of human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) and is specifically processed to concentrate extracellular vesicles (EVs), which encapsulate a potent mixture of neurotrophic factors, anti-inflammatory cytokines, and microRNAs. The primary therapeutic goal is to protect spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) from apoptosis and to modulate the inflammatory and fibrotic response triggered by the insertion of cochlear implant electrodes. By preserving the neural population and improving the electrode-nerve interface, the secretome fraction aims to enhance auditory outcomes and preserve residual hearing in implanted patients.
