Overview

Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) developed by Guangzhou Saliai Stem Cell Science and Technology Co. Ltd. are an investigational cell therapy for the treatment of ocular corneal burns, particularly chemical burns. These cells possess unique biological properties, including self-renewal, multidirectional differentiation, and potent immunomodulatory effects. In the context of corneal injury, UC-MSCs aim to accelerate tissue repair, reduce persistent inflammation, and inhibit pathological neovascularization (angiogenesis), which are common complications leading to vision loss. The therapy is administered via subconjunctival injection and has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials (NCT03237442) to assess its safety and efficacy in humans following promising results in rabbit models of alkali-induced corneal injury.
