Overview

Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) are a type of multipotent stem cell derived from umbilical cord tissue, currently being investigated for the treatment of moderate to severe diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Administered via intramuscular injection into the medial and lateral muscle groups of the lower legs, these cells are thought to exert therapeutic effects through paracrine signaling. They secrete a variety of neurotrophic factors, such as nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), as well as angiogenic factors like vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). These secretions help to promote the repair of damaged peripheral nerves, improve local microcirculation, and modulate inflammatory responses. The specific protocol under investigation by Min Long, known as the RELEASE-DPN trial, evaluates a three-dose regimen (Day 0, 7, and 28) as an adjunct to conventional glycemic and pain management therapies.
