Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) are an allogeneic cell therapy developed by Jiangsu Topcel Biotechnology in collaboration with KH Pharmaceutical. This specific cell product is being investigated for the prevention of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) stenosis, particularly in patients with end-stage diabetic kidney disease. AVF is the gold standard for hemodialysis access, but its utility is limited by high rates of stenosis caused by neointimal hyperplasia and chronic inflammation. The hUC-MSCs are administered via local injection at the anastomosis site during or after surgery. They function by secreting a variety of paracrine factors, including growth factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines, which modulate the local immune response, inhibit the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells, and promote the regeneration of the endothelial lining. This multi-targeted approach aims to maintain the patency of the fistula and reduce the need for re-intervention.
