Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by Puren Hospital Affiliated to Wuhan University of Science and Technology for the treatment of COVID-19 pneumonia. This biologic therapy, evaluated in clinical trial NCT04293692, utilizes the potent anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties of mesenchymal stem cells to mitigate the severe lung injury and systemic inflammation (cytokine storm) associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. By secreting various paracrine factors, UC-MSCs are hypothesized to reduce pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, protect alveolar epithelial and endothelial cells from damage, and promote the regeneration of functional lung tissue. The therapy is typically administered via intravenous infusion.
