Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) developed by Shandong Qilu Cell Therapy Engineering Technology Co., Ltd is an investigational cell therapy for the treatment of HIV-infected immune non-responders (INRs). These patients fail to achieve adequate CD4+ T cell recovery despite effective antiretroviral therapy (ART). hUC-MSCs are adult stem cells characterized by their potent immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. The therapy works by reducing chronic systemic immune overactivation and promoting the reconstitution of the immune system, specifically by increasing circulating naïve and central memory CD4+ T cell counts. It has been evaluated in Phase I and Phase II clinical trials (e.g., NCT04125329, NCT01213186) where it was administered via intravenous infusion in combination with standard antiviral therapy.
