Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) are a cell therapy product being investigated by Shanghai East Hospital for the treatment of persistent high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. hUC-MSCs are multipotent cells derived from the Wharton's jelly of the umbilical cord, characterized by their low immunogenicity and potent immunomodulatory effects. In patients with persistent HPV, these cells are administered via intravenous infusion to stimulate the host's immune system and potentially overcome the immune evasion strategies employed by the virus. The therapy aims to facilitate the clearance of high-risk HPV strains, which are primary drivers of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials to assess its safety and preliminary efficacy in achieving viral clearance.
