Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (UC-MSCs) are an investigational cell-based biologic therapy developed by Shanghai East Hospital for the treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Administered via multiple intravenous infusions, these multipotent cells are hypothesized to improve cardiac function by migrating to damaged myocardial tissue and releasing paracrine factors that stimulate angiogenesis, reduce fibrosis, and modulate the inflammatory response. The therapy is currently being evaluated in the PRIME-HFrEF trial, a randomized, triple-blinded study assessing changes in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and other cardiac parameters over a 12-month period using advanced imaging techniques such as MRI and contrast echocardiography.
