human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells + allogeneic islet is a combination cell therapy being investigated by Shanghai Changzheng Hospital for the treatment of various forms of diabetes, including type 1, type 2, and pancreatogenic diabetes associated with islet failure. The therapy involves the co-transplantation of allogeneic pancreatic islets, which provide a source of insulin-producing beta cells, and allogeneic human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs). The hUCMSCs are utilized for their potent immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which help to mitigate the host immune response against the transplanted islets, reduce inflammation at the graft site, and potentially promote revascularization. This synergistic approach aims to improve the survival, engraftment, and long-term function of the transplanted islets, thereby restoring endogenous insulin production and improving glycemic control in patients. The combination is typically administered via portal vein infusion.
