Overview

Human umbilical cord tissue-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (UC-MSCs) are **multipotent stromal cells** isolated from the Wharton’s jelly of human umbilical cords. These cells have the ability to differentiate into various cell types such as osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and adipocytes. Their primary therapeutic actions include **immunomodulation, anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, angiogenic, and antioxidative effects**. UC-MSCs act mainly via paracrine signaling by releasing soluble factors (cytokines, growth factors, exosomes, microRNAs) that modulate the immune system, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue repair. They are being investigated or used in the treatment of autoimmune diseases, degenerative diseases, graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), myocardial infarction, neurological disorders, and for regeneration of bone, cartilage, and other tissues[1][3][5]. UC-MSCs are typically administered as an **allogeneic cell therapy** (donor, off-the-shelf) and may be used when autologous sources are not feasible or optimal.
