Overview

Human umbilical mesenchymal stem cell exosomes are extracellular vesicles (30–180 nm in diameter) secreted by cultured human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells. These exosomes carry a cargo of proteins, mRNA, miRNA, and lipids that mediate intercellular communication and modulate biological processes. Mechanistically, they promote tissue repair and regeneration by enhancing re-epithelialization, collagen maturation, angiogenesis (via upregulation of VEGF and CD31), proliferation (increasing KI67 expression), and modulating the immune response. They have been shown to activate the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway in target cells such as dermal papilla cells for hair growth or skin fibroblasts for wound healing. Additionally, they can suppress inflammatory responses through downregulation of NLRP3 inflammasome activity in macrophages. Preclinical studies support their use in chronic wound healing (including laser injury models), skin rejuvenation/photoaging repair when delivered topically or with hydrogels/spicules to enhance penetration; they also show promise for acute liver failure via immunomodulation[1][2][4][5][6].
