Overview

Human umbilical mesenchymal stem cells (hUMSCs) are multipotent stromal cells derived from the Wharton’s jelly of the human umbilical cord. They can differentiate into a variety of cell types including osteoblasts (bone), chondrocytes (cartilage), myocytes (muscle), adipocytes (fat), and even neurons and glia under specific conditions[1][2]. hUMSCs exhibit immunomodulatory properties by secreting factors that modulate both innate and adaptive immune responses, suppress inflammation, and promote tissue repair. They have been shown to facilitate wound healing through re-epithelialization, angiogenesis, granulation tissue formation[7], as well as to support regeneration in models of neurodegenerative disease, infertility/testicular insufficiency[5], diabetes, stroke, retinal disease[3], and more. Their mechanism involves secretion of trophic factors such as prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), nitric oxide, indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO), interleukin 6 (IL-6), among others[2]. hUMSCs are considered promising for regenerative medicine due to their low immunogenicity and ethical acceptability compared to embryonic sources.
