Overview

Human varicella-zoster immune globulin is a purified solution of human immunoglobulin G (IgG) containing high titers of antibodies against the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), the causative agent of chickenpox and shingles. It is used for post-exposure prophylaxis to prevent or reduce the severity of VZV infection in high-risk individuals, such as immunocompromised patients, pregnant women, premature infants, and newborns. The drug provides passive immunity by supplying anti-VZV antibodies that bind to viral proteins and neutralize the virus before it can cause severe disease. It does not treat established infections but is effective if administered within 4 days after exposure. Human varicella-zoster immune globulin is prepared from pooled plasma donated by healthy individuals with high levels of anti-VZV antibodies and undergoes processes such as solvent/detergent treatment, anion-exchange chromatography, pasteurization, and nanofiltration to ensure safety from viral transmission[1][4][5][6].
