Hunteria umbellata extract

Hunteria umbellata extract is a botanical preparation derived from the seeds or fruits of the West African tree Hunteria umbellata (family Apocynaceae). Traditionally used in African medicine for conditions such as diabetes, obesity, pain, ulcers, and infections, its aqueous seed and fruit extracts have demonstrated antihyperglycemic (blood sugar-lowering), anti-obesity, antihyperlipidemic (lipid-lowering), antioxidant, and antiplasmodial activities in preclinical studies. The hypoglycemic effect is thought to be mediated by inhibition of intestinal glucose uptake and modulation of adrenergic homeostatic mechanisms. Phytochemical analyses reveal the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, glycosides and other bioactive compounds. Toxicity studies indicate a relatively high LD50 (>1000 mg/kg) but suggest caution due to potential mild toxicity at higher doses.
