Overview
Huoluo Xiaotong (also known as Xiao Huo Luo Dan or Huo-Luo-Xiao-Ling Dan) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula used primarily for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain conditions such as chronic joint pain (arthralgia), arthritis, muscle stiffness, and lower back pain. The formula is designed to invigorate blood circulation, dispel wind and cold from the body, resolve phlegm and dampness, unblock energy channels (meridians), and relieve pain. It contains a combination of herbs including Aconitum species (processed to reduce toxicity), Arisaema amurense rhizome, Boswellia sacra resin (frankincense), Commiphora myrrha resin (myrrh), Pheretima aspergillum (earthworm extract), among others. Modern research suggests that its mechanism involves anti-inflammatory effects through modulation of immune pathways such as MAPK signaling and inhibition of mediators like STAT3 and AKT1. The formula has demonstrated efficacy in preclinical models for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis by reducing inflammation and protecting against bone damage[2][5][6].
