Overview

Huperzine A is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alkaloid extracted from the Chinese club moss Huperzia serrata. It acts as a potent and reversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase in the central nervous system. By inhibiting this enzyme, it increases levels of acetylcholine—a neurotransmitter important for memory and learning—making it potentially beneficial for conditions characterized by cognitive decline such as Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Huperzine A may also interfere with beta-amyloid deposition pathways and inhibit N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in the cerebral cortex. In China it is approved as a drug for Alzheimer’s disease; elsewhere it is marketed primarily as an herbal or dietary supplement[1][2][3][4][5][6].
