Hutrukin is a monoclonal antibody drug candidate developed by XBiotech for the reduction of brain injury following ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot blocks a vessel supplying blood to the brain, leading to tissue damage or death. Standard emergency treatments such as clot-busting drugs or mechanical thrombectomy can restore blood flow but are associated with reperfusion injury—a secondary inflammatory response that can worsen brain damage. Hutrukin is designed to be administered immediately prior to these procedures, aiming to reduce the inflammatory injuries caused by reperfusion. The drug leverages XBiotech’s True Human antibody technology, which utilizes antibodies derived without modification from individuals with natural immunity. As of 2023–2024, Hutrukin has completed Phase I clinical trials evaluating safety and pharmacokinetics in patients undergoing treatment for ischemic stroke[1][2][3][5][7].
