HUVR-CARTemis-1 is an autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy developed by the Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío (HUVR) in collaboration with the Fundación Pública Andaluza para la Gestión de la Investigación en Salud de Sevilla (FISEVI). This academic CAR-T product is engineered to target the B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), a protein predominantly expressed on the surface of malignant plasma cells in multiple myeloma. The manufacturing process involves the genetic modification of a patient's own T lymphocytes using a lentiviral vector to express a CAR construct specific for BCMA. Once re-infused into the patient, these modified T cells recognize and eliminate BCMA-expressing tumor cells. HUVR-CARTemis-1 is currently being investigated in early-phase clinical trials for patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma who have exhausted standard treatment options.
