hVPS34 siRNA is a small interfering RNA (siRNA) designed to silence the expression of the human vacuolar protein sorting 34 (hVPS34) gene, also known as PIK3C3. hVPS34 is a class III phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) that plays a critical role in the initiation of autophagy by producing phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (PI3P), which is essential for autophagosome formation. In research settings, such as the study of pancreatic cancer (PaCa) cells, hVPS34 siRNA is used to investigate the dependency of autophagic pathways on the canonical Beclin-1/hVPS34 complex. While hVPS34 is typically a key mediator of autophagy, some studies have indicated that certain cancer cells may utilize non-canonical, hVPS34-independent pathways for survival under stress conditions like hypoxia or nutrient deprivation.
