HW021199 is a small molecule autotaxin (ATX) inhibitor being developed by the Hubei Biological Medicine Industrial Technology Institute for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Autotaxin is a secreted enzyme, also known as ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase family member 2 (ENPP2), which is responsible for the production of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA). LPA is a bioactive lipid that promotes fibroblast activation, migration, and proliferation, playing a central role in the pathogenesis of fibrotic diseases. By inhibiting autotaxin, HW021199 aims to reduce the production of LPA and thereby attenuate the fibrotic process in the lungs. The drug is currently in Phase 2 clinical development, where its safety, efficacy, and pharmacokinetic profile are being evaluated in patients with IPF.
