HW243040 is a small molecule inhibitor of the voltage-gated sodium channel Nav1.8 (SCN10A), currently under development by the Hubei Institute of Biopharmaceutical Research for the treatment of peripheral neuropathic pain. Nav1.8 is predominantly expressed in peripheral sensory neurons (nociceptors) and is essential for the generation and conduction of action potentials in response to painful stimuli. By selectively targeting Nav1.8, HW243040 is designed to provide effective pain relief while minimizing the off-target effects on the central nervous system and heart that are common with non-selective sodium channel inhibitors. The drug is being evaluated in Phase I clinical trials for safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics in healthy volunteers using oral tablet formulations.
