Overview

Hwangryunhaedoktang (HHT) is a traditional Korean herbal medicine (known as Huang-Lian-Jie-Du-Tang in China and Orengedokuto in Japan) composed of four botanical ingredients: Scutellariae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma, Phellodendri Cortex, and Gardeniae Fructus. It is approved by the Korean Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) for the treatment of various conditions including fever, inflammation, gastritis, and hypertension. HHT is currently being investigated in a Phase III clinical trial, sponsored by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI), for its efficacy in treating adult patients with atopic dermatitis. The formulation is believed to work by suppressing pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-alpha, IL-4, and IL-5) and inhibiting the NF-kappaB signaling pathway, thereby reducing skin inflammation and pruritus. It is administered orally as a decoction or granule extract, and topical applications have also been explored for skin barrier repair.
