Overview

HY1003 is a recombinant human alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) produced using a proprietary plant-based expression system (OryzHiExp) in rice endosperm. Developed by Wuhan Heyi Biotechnology (also known as Oryzogen), it is designed as an enzyme replacement therapy for patients with alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) who suffer from emphysema. The drug functions by restoring antiprotease activity in the lungs, specifically neutralizing neutrophil elastase to protect alveolar tissue from proteolytic degradation. HY1003 received FDA Orphan Drug Designation in February 2020 and entered Phase 1 clinical trials in the United States in March 2022.
