Overview

Hyalograft C is a second-generation matrix-associated autologous chondrocyte transplantation (MACT) product designed for the repair of full-thickness articular cartilage defects. It consists of expanded autologous chondrocytes (harvested from the patient) seeded onto a three-dimensional scaffold composed of HYAFF 11, which is a benzyl ester of hyaluronic acid. This tissue-engineered construct facilitates the production of a hyaline-like extracellular matrix within the defect site. Originally developed by Fidia Advanced Biopolymers and later acquired by Anika Therapeutics, the product allows for arthroscopic or minimally invasive implantation into the knee or ankle (talus). While it showed significant clinical improvement in long-term studies, the product was eventually withdrawn from the European market due to the regulatory and financial challenges associated with the Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMP) classification.
