Hyaluronan + thrombin is a combination topical treatment evaluated by The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston for the acceleration of wound healing at skin graft donor sites in burn patients. The formulation combines hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid), a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan that promotes cell migration and tissue repair, with thrombin, a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade. Thrombin facilitates hemostasis by converting fibrinogen into fibrin, while hyaluronan interacts with cellular receptors such as CD44 to stimulate re-epithelialization. This combination was studied in a Phase 2/3 clinical trial (NCT01113307) to compare its efficacy against standard treatments like Scarlet Red and microbial nanocellulose dressings.
