**Hyaluronic acid** is a naturally occurring, high-molecular-weight glycosaminoglycan polysaccharide composed of repeating glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine units. Therapeutic preparations use its hygroscopic, viscoelastic, lubricating, tissue-space-filling, and barrier-forming properties rather than a single receptor-selective pharmacologic mechanism. It is used in multiple product-specific contexts, including ophthalmic lubricants for dry eye, intra-articular viscosupplementation for osteoarthritis, topical wound-healing applications, and injectable soft-tissue augmentation or reconstructive procedures. The term is intrinsically broad because clinical products differ substantially in molecular weight, concentration, source, cross-linking, salt form, and dosage form; cross-linked dermal fillers and sodium hyaluronate products should be treated as distinct product formulations rather than interchangeable synonyms.
