Overview

Hyaluronic acid + carboxymethylcellulose is a combination of two viscoelastic polymers used primarily in ophthalmic and surgical applications. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan that provides significant hydration and promotes ocular surface healing, while carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is a cellulose derivative that enhances viscosity and stabilizes the tear film. In ophthalmic formulations, such as **Optive Fusion**, the combination acts synergistically to provide osmoprotection and relief for moderate to severe dry eye disease. In surgical contexts, the combination is formulated as a bioresorbable membrane (e.g., **Seprafilm**) that serves as a physical barrier to separate internal tissues and reduce the incidence of postoperative adhesions following abdominal or pelvic surgery.
