Hyaluronic acid + galacto-xyloglucan is a topical ophthalmic combination therapy used as a multiple-action tear substitute for the management of dry eye disease (DED). The formulation typically consists of 0.4% hyaluronic acid, a high-molecular-weight glycosaminoglycan with exceptional water-retention and mucoadhesive properties, and 0.2% galacto-xyloglucan (also known as tamarind seed polysaccharide), a natural polysaccharide that provides a protective barrier and promotes corneal wound healing. These two polymers act synergistically to stabilize the tear film, reduce ocular surface evaporation, and provide long-lasting lubrication. Clinical studies have demonstrated its efficacy in improving subjective symptoms and objective signs of DED, including tear film breakup time and corneal staining, particularly in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction or those using medications like oral contraceptives or isotretinoin.
