A combination ophthalmic formulation containing hyaluronic acid (HA; often as sodium hyaluronate) and hydroxypropyl guar (HPG), primarily used as a lubricant eye drop for the management of dry eye disease. The dual-polymer system leverages the viscoelastic and mucomimetic properties of both polymers to enhance ocular surface hydration, lubrication, and protection. Upon instillation, HPG forms a cross-linked gel matrix with borate ions at physiological pH on the ocular surface, prolonging retention time and providing sustained lubrication. Hyaluronic acid contributes to water retention and tissue hydration due to its high molecular weight and hydrophilic nature. Together, these ingredients reduce friction during blinking, stabilize the tear film, protect corneal epithelial cells from desiccation damage, improve cell barrier function after insult or injury in preclinical models compared to either polymer alone[1][2][3][4]. This combination is marketed under brands such as Systane Hydration for relief of dry eye symptoms.
