Hyaluronidase (ovine) is a highly purified enzyme derived from sheep that acts as a spreading or diffusing substance by hydrolyzing hyaluronic acid, a key component of the extracellular matrix in connective tissue. By breaking down the glucosaminidic bond in hyaluronic acid, it temporarily increases tissue permeability and decreases viscosity of the intercellular cement, thereby facilitating the absorption and dispersion of injected fluids, drugs, and radiopaque agents. It is primarily used as an adjuvant to enhance subcutaneous fluid administration for hydration (hypodermoclysis), increase absorption of other injectable medications or contrast agents in imaging procedures, and is approved for use in treating vitreous hemorrhages. The drug’s effect on tissue permeability also makes it useful off-label for managing edema and facilitating removal of epidural adhesions[2][4][8].
