Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hyaneb is an inhaled combination therapy consisting of 7% hypertonic saline (NaCl) and 0.1% hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate). Developed by Chiesi, it is primarily utilized as a mucoregulatory treatment for patients with cystic fibrosis and other inflammatory respiratory diseases. The hypertonic saline component works through osmotic action, drawing water into the airway surface liquid to hydrate and thin thick mucus, thereby facilitating its clearance via coughing or physiotherapy. The addition of hyaluronic acid is a key differentiator from standard hypertonic saline treatments; it acts to improve the tolerability of the high-salt solution by reducing airway irritation and the incidence of treatment-induced bronchoconstriction. Clinical evidence suggests this formulation significantly reduces the need for pre-treatment bronchodilators compared to saline-only therapies.
