Overview

Hybrid Donor-Acceptor Polymer Particles (HDAPPs) are experimental theranostic nanoparticles developed for the detection and treatment of malignancies, specifically disseminated colorectal cancer. These particles are composed of semiconducting polymers that utilize a donor-acceptor electronic configuration to facilitate the conversion of near-infrared (NIR) light into thermal energy. This photothermal property allows for the localized ablation of tumor cells upon laser stimulation. Furthermore, HDAPPs exhibit fluorescent properties that enable intraoperative tumor detection. To improve specificity, these nanoparticles are frequently functionalized with hyaluronic acid (HA), which targets the cancer stem cell marker CD44. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that intraperitoneal administration of HA-functionalized HDAPPs can selectively bind to colorectal cancer tumors and significantly reduce tumor burden through photothermal therapy.
