Hybrid therapy refers to a specific combination regimen primarily used for the eradication of Helicobacter pylori infection. The classic "hybrid therapy" protocol consists of an initial phase with a dual regimen—proton pump inhibitor (PPI) plus amoxicillin—for 7 days, followed by a quadruple regimen—PPI, amoxicillin, clarithromycin, and metronidazole—for another 7 days. This approach is designed to maximize eradication rates by targeting H. pylori with multiple antibiotics and acid suppression in sequence. Hybrid therapy has demonstrated high efficacy (>90% cure rates) even in regions with significant antibiotic resistance and is recommended as a first-line treatment for H. pylori infection in several international guidelines[7]. The mechanism involves inhibition of gastric acid secretion (by PPI), disruption of bacterial cell wall synthesis (amoxicillin), inhibition of protein synthesis (clarithromycin), and DNA damage (metronidazole). Hybrid therapies can also refer more broadly to strategies that combine different pharmacological or therapeutic modalities within one protocol or molecule; however, "hybrid therapy" as a named regimen most commonly refers to the above anti-H. pylori protocol[1][5][7].
