Hydra-Lyte

Hydra-Lyte is a veterinary oral rehydration therapy (ORT) product developed and manufactured by LLOYD, Inc. (Lloyd Pharma). It is specifically formulated to provide a source of energy and essential electrolytes to animals suffering from dehydration and electrolyte depletion, conditions frequently associated with neonatal diarrhea (scours) or environmental stress. The formulation contains a balanced mixture of dextrose, sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, potassium chloride, and glycine. The inclusion of dextrose and glycine facilitates the active co-transport of sodium and water across the intestinal epithelium via the sodium-glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) and sodium-amino acid cotransport systems, significantly enhancing rehydration efficiency. The bicarbonate component serves as a buffer to correct metabolic acidosis, while potassium and chloride replace lost intracellular and extracellular ions. It is primarily indicated for use in calves, foals, and pigs.
