Overview

Hydrastis canadensis extract is an herbal extract derived from the root and rhizome of the Hydrastis canadensis (goldenseal) plant, native to eastern North America. It has a long history of use in traditional medicine, notably by Native American populations, to treat a range of ailments such as infections, digestive issues, skin and eye irritations, and mucosal inflammation. The extract contains isoquinoline alkaloids, mainly berberine, hydrastine, and canadine, which are believed responsible for its purported antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. Modern uses include adjunctive therapy for upper respiratory tract infections, digestive disturbances, and topical applications for minor wounds and mucosal irritations. Despite widespread use, high-quality clinical evidence supporting these uses is limited, and most supporting data are in vitro or animal studies. Hydrastis canadensis extract is primarily available as dietary supplements in forms such as teas, capsules, tinctures, drops, and topical formulations[1][2][3][4][5][6].
