Overview

Hydreasyn is an oral antineoplastic and cytoreductive agent containing hydroxycarbamide (hydroxyurea), marketed by the Greek pharmaceutical company Farmasyn S.A. It functions as a small molecule inhibitor of ribonucleotide reductase, an enzyme essential for the conversion of ribonucleotides to deoxyribonucleotides, thereby inhibiting DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. Hydreasyn is approved for the treatment of various myeloproliferative disorders, including chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), idiopathic thrombocythemia, and polycythemia vera, particularly in patients at high risk for thromboembolic complications. Additionally, it is utilized in the management of sickle cell disease to decrease the frequency of painful crises and the need for blood transfusions.
