Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hydrochlorothiazide + metoprolol is an oral fixed-dose combination antihypertensive product composed of two **small-molecule** agents: metoprolol, a selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker, and hydrochlorothiazide, a thiazide diuretic. It is used to treat **hypertension** and is generally intended for patients whose blood pressure has already been titrated on the individual components rather than for initial therapy. The combination lowers blood pressure through complementary mechanisms: metoprolol reduces heart rate, myocardial contractility, and renin release via beta-1 blockade, while hydrochlorothiazide promotes renal sodium and water excretion by inhibiting the sodium-chloride cotransporter in the distal convoluted tubule. Marketed versions have included **Lopressor HCT** and **Dutoprol**, reflecting different metoprolol salt and release-formulation presentations.
